Power Grid Corporation to Upgrade Substations Across NE for 24×7 Power Supply

First Published: 2nd November, 2024 19:45 IST

The upgrade will support reliable power distribution in upper Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, and the broader Northeast region.

Power Grid Corporation of India, the central public sector undertaking under the Union Power Ministry engaged in transmission of bulk power across states, is planning to upgrade substations across Northeast to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the region. 7-8 substations would be taken up for immediate upgradation.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Madhushudhan Dutta, Chief General Manager of Asset Management at Power Grid’s Shillong office said, the initiative aims to maintain the region’s power “highway” with robust systems, capable of withstanding challenges such as natural disasters. To enhance efficiency and reliability, Power Grid is replacing outdated equipment with modern technology, ensuring quick recovery from any power disruptions through emergency restoration systems.

The upgrade will support reliable power distribution in upper Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, and the broader Northeast region. Although no new projects are planned at this stage, the current effort targets existing substations that have been operational for over 30 years, aligning with the 2024-2029 tariff regime.
Sharing more about the CPSU’s plans, Dutta said that the modernization process includes converting Air Insulated Substations (AIS) to Gas Insulated Substations (GIS), integrating new technology. Key projects underway include a power line from Kathalguri to Namsai District in Arunachal Pradesh and AIS-to-GIS conversions in Manipur.
