Police to Intensify Checking Against Drunken Driving, Assam CM Tightens Rules Amid Road Accidents in Guwahati

It needs to be mentioned that, Assam is the only major State in the country to see a reduction in road accident fatalities.

In light of increasing road accidents across Assam, particularly in Guwahati during evening and night hours, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired an important Review Meeting on Road Safety with stakeholders. While Assam has seen a dip in accident fatalities, the time period till January is very crucial to maintain these numbers.

The key decisions taken at the cabinet meeting are:

Very strict enforcement of the No Drink and Drive rule, Intensified checking post 10 PM, especially in Guwahati to detect drunk driving.

An intensified road safety drive and monitoring are to be carried out till Magh Bihu.

Excise Department to explore regulating bar timings and enforcing dynamic seasonal timings

An SOP to be published on ensuring safety in picnic spots- all stakeholders to ensure cleanliness and safety in picnic spots.

Work on installing streetlights, Foot Overbridges, Reflection patches, etc. to be expedited in Guwahati Bypass to check rising accidents.

Constructing speed breakers, crash barriers, signages, and fluorescent lights to be included in the Scope of Work of road building by PWD.

Special instructions to SPs of Border districts to implement the installation of reflective patches on the rear side of commercial trucks and vehicles.

Police and District Administrations to take out extensive road safety campaigns on social media platforms to spread awareness amongst the general public.

Vision tests of drivers of commercial vehicles are to be conducted and corrective measures are to be suggested along with facilitating treatment.

Installation of streetlights in all major towns to be carried out in mission mode.

Road safety video/drama to be played before the start of any public event.
Medical Colleges and Hospitals to be ready to provide the best possible care to accident victims.

Security to be enhanced in Medical Colleges/Hospitals to ensure the safety of doctors in untoward situations.

It needs to be mentioned that, Assam is the only major State in the country to see a reduction in road accident fatalities.

Overall accidents and fatalities have seen a reduction of around 15%. Many districts have seen a dip in accidents following the enforcement of instructions of the last review meeting.

The meeting witnessed the presence of key officials, including Assam DGP GP Singh, Special DGP Harmeet Singh, state Transport Minister Jogen Mohan, and others.

Earlier yesterday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a cabinet meeting, where several key decisions were made. The cabinet approved stern action against 683 government employees found misusing the Orunodoi scheme, with departmental proceedings and show cause notices to be issued.

Additionally, 2025 was declared the “Year of Reading” to promote book reading, with book fairs across districts and the creation of libraries for government employees. The Assam International Skill Centre (AISC) will be established to facilitate overseas job placements. Lastly, a monthly remuneration of ₹9,000 was approved for Gaon Pradhans, effective January 1, 2025.
