During the last count in 2012, the number of rhinos at the Sanctuary, 55 km east of Guwahati was 93. While, Kaziranga is the main home of the one-horned rhino with a population of more than 2000 rhinos in an area of 500 sq km, Pobitora is the densest habitat of the one-horned rhino with 102 rhinos within an area of 16 sq km.

Apart from the 16 sq km rhino habitat, the rest of the sanctuary area is spread over hills. The wildlife officials have counted 28 adult male rhinos, 43 adult females and the rest are sub-adults or calves.

Since 2012, Pobitora faced only six rhino poaching cases until now. Twenty rhinos died during the last six years due to natural causes.
