Phase-3 Lok Sabha Polls: 1351 candidates in fray from 12 States/UTs, 47 contesting from Assam

Both, NDA (BJP, AGP and UPPL) and the Congress have fielded candidates in all the 4 seats in Assam.

Fate of 47 candidates in Assam will be sealed on May 7 as the state will be going for the 3rd phase of Lok Sabha elections.

4 seats are going to polls in Assam in the third phase for which a total of 126 nominations were received, out of which only 52 were found to be valid. However, 5 candidates withdrew their nominations reducing the total number of contesting candidates to 47.

After the withdrawal of nomination, 12 candidates are contesting in Kokrajhar, 14 in Barpeta, 13 in Dhubri and 8 candidates in Guwahati.

Both, NDA (BJP, AGP and UPPL) and the Congress have fielded candidates in all the four seats.
In the prestigious Guwahati seat, the BJP and Congress have fielded women candidates and also newcomers. Bijuli Kalita Medhi is contesting on a BJP ticket from Guwahati, the Congress has fielded Mira Barthakur Goswami.
BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad is contesting from the Barpeta (candidate- Phani Bhushan Choudhury) and Dhubri (candidate- Javed Islam) seats while UPPL has fielded Joyanta Basumatary from the at Kokrajhar seat.
On the other hand, a total of 1351 candidates will be in fray in the parliamentary elections in the third phase across 12 States/Union Territories (UTs). A total of 2963 nominations were filed for elections to the 95 Parliamentary Constituencies.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) in a statement said that the 1351 candidates contesting the 3rd phase of Lok Sabha elections also
includes 8 contesting candidates for the adjourned poll in 29-Betul (ST) PC of Madhya Pradesh.
Additionally, one candidate from Surat PC in Gujarat has been elected unopposed. The last date for withdrawal of candidature for all 12 States/UTs was April 22, 2024.
A total of 2963 nominations were filed for 95 PCs (including 29-Betul) across 12 States/UTs going for polls in phase 3 for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
The last date for filing nominations for phase 3 for all 12 States/UTs was April 19, 2024. After the scrutiny of all nominations filed, 1563 nominations were found to be valid.
In phase 3, Gujarat had a maximum of 658 nominations from 26 Parliamentary Constituencies, followed by Maharashtra with 519 nominations from 11 PCs. 40-Osmanabad Parliamentary Constituency in Maharashtra received a maximum of 77 nominations followed by Bilaspur PC in Chhattisgarh with 68 nomination forms.
