Over 5 kg heroin seized in Aizawl, 2 including a Myanmar national held

In a major victory in the war against drugs, the Excise and Narcotics Department in Mizoram on Wednesday seized over 5 kilograms of heroin at Aizawl.

This is the second such seizure in two days.

Acting upon specific inputs, the Excise and Narcotics Department seized 5.427 kilos of heroin at Aizawl View, Falkland locality from the possession of Lalnunmawia aka Puia, a resident of Teidu, Tripura, currently residing at Aizawl. Along with him, a Myanmarese national identified as 34-year-old Lalchawiliana, who is stated to be a resident of Khampat Kanaan in Myanmar and currently residing at Vairengte town, has also been arrested.

Upon interrogation by officials, the apprehended persons revealed that the contraband had been smuggled in from Myanmar hidden in a bundle of second hand clothes.

Officials also seized a vehicle that was used for the transportation of the drugs.

The apprehended have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 and will be produced in court. If convicted, they can face imprisonment of 10 to 20 years with fine of Rs 1 to 2 lakh.

On Tuesday, two Myanmarese nationals were arrested in connection with drug trafficking.
