Opposition to Upper Siang Dam Continues, Villagers Unite Against Proposed Multi-Purpose Storage Dam
First Published: 5th October, 2024 18:41 IST
The protestors demanded that the government reconsider the project due to its potential impact on local communities and the environment.
In the ongoing controversy surrounding the proposed 12,500 MW Upper Siang Multi-Purpose Project, the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF) intensified its protests today. Despite heavy rain, around 8,000 villagers took to the streets in Geku, Upper Siang district, to voice their opposition to the mega dam.
Carrying banners and placards, the protesters shouted slogans against the proposed project on the Siang River, which is set to be implemented by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). However, a Pre-Feasibility Report for the dam is yet to be conducted.
While the Arunachal Pradesh government is pushing hard for the project, SIFF and other anti-dam groups argue that the dam will submerge several villages and lead to significant environmental damage in downstream areas. The protestors demanded that the government reconsider the project due to its potential impact on local communities and the environment.
