The Home and Political Department of Assam Government has issued a deadline of July 15 to the Deputy Commissioners of the state for completion of the biometric collection of all cases with reference to the Claims and Objections part of the NRC process.
The DCs have been directed to employ additional manpower and machinery to meet the July 15 deadline. Reports state that biometric collection process has not been able to keep pace with the hearing processes of NRC.
It has been learnt that biometric collection has been completed with respect to only 55 percent of the 23 lakh people who have already appeared for the Claims and Objections process.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has stated that the final NRC must not be published beyond July 31.
