At a time when there is much hype in the hill state over the emergence of the Trinamool Congress as a contender for the 2023 Assembly elections, senior NPP leader and minister in the Conrad Sangma cabinet, James Sangma has said that the new entrant’s strength can only be gauged during elections.

Briefing media persons, James Sangma also took an indirect dig on the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC by stating that while causing defection is one thing, winning an election is a different ball game.

When asked whether the NPP saw a serious challenge in the form of TMC, Sangma said the focus of the NPP was to strengthen its organisation and serve the people.

The Meghalaya Power Minister also lashed out at the TMC for allegedly trying to project NPP as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)s B team.

Responding to a query on whether there is any chance of the NPP working together with Congress in future, Sangma said there is no room for such speculations at the moment.
