Northeast Talents dominate India’s AFC Women’s Asian Cup squad selection

The 20th edition of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup will commence on 20th January 2022 and will run until 6th February 2022. The tournament that will see the best twelve Asian Women’s national football teams taking part will be hosted by India. Three venues across Maharashtra will host the prestigious continental tournament.

India begins their campaign in Navi Mumbai against Iran on January 20, before facing Chinese Taipei at the same venue. 

Anju Tamang from Sikkim,  Maibam Linthoingambi Devi, Sweety Devi Ngangbam and many others from Manipur have been selected in the squad dominated by players from the Northeast.

The final list of 23 registered players are as follows:

GOALKEEPERS: Aditi Chauhan (1), Maibam Linthoingambi Devi (23), Sowmiya Narayanasamy (19).

DEFENDERS: Dalima Chhibber (17), Sweety Devi Ngangbam (2), Ritu Rani (21), Loitongbam Ashalata Devi (4), Manisa Panna (3), Hemam Shilky Devi (5), Sanju Yadav (8).

MIDFIELDERS: Yumnam Kamala Devi (6), Anju Tamang (9), Karthika Angamuthu (20), Nongmeithem Ratanbala Devi (7), Naorem Priyangka Devi (14), Indumathi Kathiresan (12).

FORWARDS: Manisha Kalyan  (16), Grace Dangmei (11), Pyari Xaxa (10), Renu (15), Sumati Kumari (22), Sandhiya Ranganathan (13), Mariyammal Balamurugan (18).

Twelve nations from Asia have been divided into three groups of four from which they will begin their campaign for the coveted title. 

Group A: India, China PR, Chinese Taipei, Iran.

Group B: Australia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia.

Group C: Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Myanmar.
