The protests intensified, with students demanding a transparent and swift investigation.
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar has suspended Dr. D Koteshwara Raju, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, after a first-year female student accused him of molestation. The administration announced the suspension around 3:00 AM today, following massive protests across the campus demanding strict action.
According to sources, Dr. Raju allegedly touched the student inappropriately, leading her to confide in her classmates. Outraged students quickly mobilised, staging demonstrations and calling for immediate disciplinary measures. The protests intensified, with students demanding a transparent and swift investigation.
Institutional sources confirmed that this is not the first time Dr. Raju has faced such accusations. In 2021, a similar complaint was filed against him, and several other allegations are believed to have gone unreported.
The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) at NIT Silchar has now launched a formal investigation into the allegations. The committee, responsible for handling sexual harassment cases under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013, has assured a fair and thorough inquiry into the matter.
