New Meghalaya Parking Policy Aims to Tackle Shillong’s Congestion with Ban on Roadside Parking

Meghalaya Ban on Roadside Parking; Sniawbhalang Dhar, confirmed that the days of unchecked parking on public roads are over.

In a decisive move to combat Shillong’s growing traffic congestion, the Meghalaya government has enforced a strict ban on roadside parking under the newly implemented Meghalaya Parking Policy for Urban Areas, 2025. The policy, which came into effect on March 6, 2025, aims to regulate parking and establish designated parking zones across urban areas.

Deputy Chief Minister-in-Charge of the Urban Affairs Department, Sniawbhalang Dhar, confirmed that the days of unchecked parking on public roads are over.

“We are modifying the rules, and no one will be allowed to park directly on the road. This decision will strategically reduce traffic congestion,” he stated.

Authorities have identified night-time random parking as a significant issue, particularly as it obstructs emergency vehicles during fires and other incidents. The new policy directly addresses this concern, ensuring a structured approach to parking management. Dhar reiterated that regulating parking is a crucial step towards improving urban mobility and accessibility.

“The Meghalaya Parking Policy 2025 specifically addresses parking regulations. Its main goal is to reduce roadside parking and facilitate smoother traffic movement,” Dhar stated.

The government is actively working on identifying legal parking bays and expediting the development of new parking facilities. Dhar acknowledged the challenges posed by random parking and the city’s increasing traffic but assured that measures are being implemented swiftly.

“Parking lots will be developed very soon, we are trying to expedite the process as much as possible,” he said. Additionally, he highlighted ongoing initiatives such as police-led traffic management and the planned relocation of the new city secretariat, which are expected to contribute to long-term traffic decongestion.

As Shillong continues to grapple with traffic issues, the enforcement of the Meghalaya Parking Policy marks a significant step toward improving urban transport efficiency. While implementation will take time, the government remains committed to ensuring a systematic and well-regulated parking infrastructure.
