A dedicated nature lover, Rai from Assam has tirelessly protected Assam’s Bongaingaon Sonakhuli Hill for the past thirty years. There has been no government support, awards, schemes or recognition but Rai’s unwavering commitment to preserving the environment has made him a true warrior of nature.
Purnakanto Rai found his purpose in life in safeguarding the pristine beauty of Sonakhuli Hill. With a deep reverence for nature, he has been vigilant in ensuring that no trees are cut, and the area remains free from pollution caused by plastic bottles and polythene.
Every year, during the months of December, January, and February, tourists flock to the hill for picnics and outings. During this time, Rai takes on the responsibility to maintain a clean and environmentally friendly atmosphere, preventing litter from tarnishing the natural splendour of the place. He single-handedly shoulders the task of preserving the hill’s pristine condition for future generations.
In his own words, Purnakanto Rai expressed his unwavering dedication to the cause, saying, “I will continue the work protecting the hill and devote myself to the care of nature.”
Despite the lack of recognition, Rai remains resolute in his mission to protect this invaluable natural treasure.
