The situation went out of control at the Oting area of Mon’s Tizit subdivision, the district headquarter town when angry protesters waiting for the funeral got impatient and ransacked the office of the Konyak Union, the apex Konyak tribal body, in the heart of Mon.

The crowd was waiting for the remains of the 13 villagers who were killed in a counter-insurgency gone wrong in Nagaland’s Mon.

Later, the mob said to be around 200 strong, marched to the nearby Assam Rifles camp attacking it and setting some establishments on fire. This prompted the Assam Rifles troops to open fire that killed 2 of the protesters and injured several others.

Meanwhile, the post mortem of the bodies has finally been concluded and the funeral is slated for 10 am tomorrow under the auspices of the Konyak Union. People would gather at the local ground in Mon from where the funeral procession would begin.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will attend the funeral along with Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton who is also the minister in charge Home department.

This was informed to Northeast Live by Deputy Chief Minister Patton who will reach Mon by midnight. Patton will be accompanied by Nagaland DGP and Home Commissioner.

CM Neiphiu Rio, former CM, and NPF leader TR Zeliang and other senior government leaders will arrive in Mon tomorrow ahead of the funeral to take stock of the situation and meet with community leaders.

Following the Mon tour, CM Rio, who cut short his New Delhi visit and returned to Kohima today, will hold a high-power cabinet meet in Kohima.
