Regarding the Assam-Mizoram border dispute, the minister stated that government-level discussions are ongoing to find a solution.

The Assam government on Wednesday informed the state assembly that four neighbouring states, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Meghalaya have encroached on a total of 82,751.86 hectares of land across 17 districts of Assam.

Replying to a question by Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Assam Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora stated that Nagaland has encroached the largest area, occupying 59,490.21 hectares of Assam’s land, followed by Arunachal Pradesh, which has encroached 16,144.01 hectares. Mizoram and Meghalaya have taken 3,675.78 hectares and 3,441.86 hectares, respectively.

The encroachments have affected several districts, including Golaghat, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Cachar, Kamrup, West Karbi Anglong, South Salmara Mankachar, Karimganj (now Sribhumi), and Hailakandi.

Atul Bora assured that discussions are ongoing at the government level to resolve the inter-state border disputes. He highlighted that Assam and Meghalaya had 12 disputed sectors along their 884.9 km boundary, and six of these disputes were settled through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on March 29, 2022, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Similarly, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh formed 12 regional committees to address the issue. These committees visited the border areas, interacted with local residents, and took steps toward conflict resolution. On April 20, 2023, both states signed an MoU in New Delhi, in the presence of Amit Shah. As a result, 71 out of 123 disputed villages were amicably settled, and a timeline was set to finalise the boundaries of the remaining villages.

Regarding the Assam-Mizoram border dispute, the minister stated that government-level discussions are ongoing to find a solution.
