Moreh gun battle update: Manipur CM dials HM, Defence Minister; Centre to send additional central forces

The Centre has decided to rush additional central forces to the trouble torn border town of Moreh in Manipur where heavily armed gunmen has been engaged in serial attacks on security forces for the last several days.

A contingent of the central forces is about to land in Moreh anytime now to assist the Assam Rifles, BSF as well as Manipur police personnel who are already engaged in combating the armed gunmen.

There has been heavy firing on security forces in the last 48 hours leading to retaliation by the troops.

2 Manipur police personnel have died and at least 5 others have been injured in the shoot-out.
The bodies of the deceased have been flown to Imphal early today by helicopter.

Meanwhile, a voice message that is in circulation in the social media, men could be heard speaking in the Burmese language.

The authenticity of this viral voice message could not be independently verified.

It may be mentioned here that Moreh situation just along the India-Myanmar border is the last Indian post along the border with Myanmar and is a huge trading hub. Both legal and illegal trade takes place though Moreh. The recent spate of violence is being seen by many as more of a turf war or a battle for territorial supremacy. The viral voice message in Burmese is also raising questions if infiltrators from Myanmar are engaging with the Indian security forces. However, top security officials said that no incidence of infiltration from Myanmar has been reported yet.

But the situation across the border in Myanmar is extremely volatile, the Peoples’ Defence Army routing the Myanmar Army.

Just yesterday, 276 Myanmar army personnel crossed the border and entered Parva village in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district on Wednesday and surrendered to the Assam Rifles.

They’re currently putting up at the Assam Rifles camp and will be brought to Aizawl.

As per inputs, the Myanmar soldiers arrived at Bandukbanga at around 4:00 p.m. with arms and ammunition on Wednesday. They’re currently putting up at the Assam Rifles camp and will be brought to Aizawl.

The Myanmar Army personnel, also known as ‘Tatmadaw’, entered Mizoram’s Lawntlai district after fleeing their camps across the international border.
