Amidst stiff resistance from pressure groups to scrap the Meghalaya Gaming Act, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has reiterated his commitment that the government will not set up any casinos in the state and urged stakeholders and pressure groups to take his commitment seriously.
According to the Chief Minister, people should believe him as he has given the statement on the floor of the house since it means serious business.
He said he wanted to make things clear that the question of going into new gaming zones and areas has been stopped as of now until and unless the government is able to discuss it with all stakeholders.

Conrad added that the government was working towards a win-win situation where the gaming would be right to the border, generating revenue from GST to the tune of Rs 500 to 600 crores. However, the government has decided not to move forward due to the concerns from the citizens.
According to him, the three licences which were given on a provisional basis have expired today, adding that the provisional licences which were given on March 29, 2020, which is way ahead of the public debate that started in May.
