Mizoram to get new airport to serve civilians and the Air Force

A new airport with heliport facilities will be built in Mizoram to utilise it for civilian use as well as Air Force purposes.

The IAF’s Eastern Air Command chief, Air Marshal S. P. Dharkar held a meeting with Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Wednesday and discussed the feasibility of setting up the airport. They also discussed some security matters in the state and in other Northeastern states.

Chief Minister Zoramthanga said that they have already identified two locations for this new infrastructure in the southern part of Mizoram which shares borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Mizoram currently has only one airport—Lengpui Airport, which is a domestic airport located in Aizawl.

Lengpui Airport surrounded by mountains covered in beautiful greenery, offers easier air travel between the hilly region and Guwahati, New Delhi, Kolkata and other parts of the country.

The upgradation of the Lengpui airport is currently underway under the Improvement and Upgradation of Operational and Non-Operational facilities project funded under North East Special Infrastructure Development Schemes (NESIDS). The upgradation work is estimated to cost Rs 19.59 crore and is expected to be completed by December.
