Mizoram registered its highest ever single-day spike in COVID-19 cases, with 528 more people testing positive from a Rehabilitation Centre on Monday.

This is the highest number of cases detected in one day in the state since the outbreak of the pandemic last year.

Triggering fresh concerns, the new cases were detected at the Thutak Nunpuitu Team (TNT), an Orphanage Home & Rehabilitation Centre located in the outskirt of the capital Aizawl.

A total of 989 samples were tested among 1500 residents in the facility, of which over 500 tested positive for coronavirus.

Meanwhile, it is likely that more new cases might be detected as testing of the remaining 511 individuals are underway. The results for which are expected to be out by this evening.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said he is personally monitoring the situation after the detection of record number of new cases in the orphanage and rehabilitation centre.
