Mizoram Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai on Wednesday felicitated renowned social activist B Sangkhumi with a Letter of Appreciation for her unique achievement in the field of women empowerment in the state.
B Sangkhumi will be conferred with Padma Shri award by the President of India, along with others whose names had been approved for conferment of 119 Padma Awards this year.
Governor Pillai congratulated Sangkhumi for getting her works recognized and appreciated at the highest level. The Governor also expressed his deep appreciation of the pioneering works done by her and her activist friends in the fight against social evils and for women empowerment in the Mizo society.
Sangkhumi also expressed her gratitude for getting acknowledgment from the Head of the State on her achievement. She thanked everyone who had joined her in the social cause to fight for improving the status of women in Mizoram.
B Sangkhumi, a former public servant went on to lead the largest women federation and pressure group Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl, in different capacities for a considerably long period of time.
She had also been know for working in the Mizoram Public Service Commission for 9 years, first as Member and later on as Chairman. Prior to her stint in MPSC, she was the Director of Higher and Technical Education of Mizoram.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Zoramthanga took to micro-blogging site Twitter to congratulate B Sangkhumi on her achievement.
“Mrs. B Sangkhumi, who led the largest women federation in Mizoram, Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl for a considerably long period of time is the latest Padma Shri recipient from Mizoram. Her cause for women empowerment in the state earned her this merit. Congratulations!,” Zoramthanga tweeted.
