Good news for farmers of Mizoram. In a move that would give a filip to farmers and the farm sector of Mizoram, state Power and Electricity Minister R. Lalzirliana on Thursday said that efforts are on to provide electricity to 51 clusters of cultivation areas across the state.

While speaking to media, Lalzirliana said that power connections to 51 cluster areas of cultivation is being implemented under the funding of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

He said that 10-megawatt capacity grid connected Solar Plant is in the anvil at Thenzawl in central Mizoram’s Serchhip district which is also funded by the NABARD.

Four solar plants have already been completed in the state which are generating 28.631 megawatts, he said, adding that this has been achieved despite the terrain being a major impediment in establishment of solar projects in the state.

Though efforts are being made to implement pre-paid smart metres in the state, the Power and Electricity department is unlikely to launch the scheme on time due to technical snags, the minister added.

He further said that the state government incurred expenditure to the tune of Rs 1,835.39 crore for purchase of energy during the last 4 years and the penalties paid due to late payment of the energy purchase was Rs 15.14 crore.

Shortage of manpower in the state Power department is 954 out of the 2,162 sanctioned posts, he added.
