Mizoram government has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India requesting the Centre to ensure that the rights of ethnic Mizos living in different countries were not violated.
The letter dated May 3, 2019 requested the Home Ministey to take appropriate action in regards to the United Nations Declaration of Rights if Indigenous Peoples, 2007, state home minister Lalchamliana informed the state assembly on Thursday.
In a written reply to a question from V.L. Zaithanzama of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Lalchamliana said that the state government had asked the MHA to pursue the rights of the ethnic Mizos divided into different countries by giving them higher autonomy and unite them under a single administration.
The home minister also said that 429 state armed police personnel have been deployed to protect the interstate border areas where 39 battalion outposts are erected.
He said that 24 BOPs are in place along the Mizoram-Assam border areas while there are 8 BOPs along the Tripura border and 7 BOPs along the Manipur border.
There are more BOPs along the Assam border due to long standing border dispute with the largest neighboring state where violence had broken out a number of times, the worst being on July 26, 2021 when armed police of the two districts opened fire resulting in the death of 5 Assam Police personnel.
