The election to the 19 wards of the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) was held peacefully on Tuesday.
A total of 63.62 per cent of the 2.18 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the municipal election, informed the election officials. The voting took place from 7 am to 4 pm.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga while casting his vote said that he is confident of winning the elections by bagging at least 12 to 13 wards. The CM further stated that the people have faith in the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF).
Meanwhile Congress chief and former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla who also exercised his franchise asserted that the party has fielded good candidates and is hopeful of winning the AMC elections.
66 candidates, including 20 women are contesting the AMC elections. It needs to be mentioned here that six of the 19 wards are reserved for women.
The counting of votes will commence on February 18.
The ruling MNF and opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and Congress have fielded candidates in 19 seats each, while the BJP in contesting in nine wards.
In the last 2015 AMC elections, the MNF had won 11 seats, while the Congress had bagged seven and the Mizoram People’s Conference one.
The election was conducted whilst maintaining the Covid-19 protocols.
