With pressure groups mounting pressure on the Meghalaya government for the introduction of Inner Line Permit in the state, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said that the state government is going to make the next best thing by putting a ‘virtual ILP’ in place to thwart entry of outsiders into the state.

Addressing media persons on Thursday, Sangma said before Christmas a system would be put up for checking everybody from outside the state. Recruitment and training of manpower for Umling checkpoint is underway.

Sangma admitted that some members spoke about the difficulty faced by people while entering the state.

“We have explained to them that the state will have to maintain some kind of screening to ensure that our people are safe,” he said.

Asserting that the implementation of entry and exit point was shortly going to be a reality, he added that in the future, registration through software or app to enter the state would become mandatory.

The Chief Minister added that the project is on the verge of completion and the recruitment process has begun and advertisements for recruitment have been floated.

“With the training of manpower, we are optimistic that the entry and exit point will be made operational within a week or first 10 days of December,” Sangma said.

It may be mentioned that different pressure groups have threatened to intensify their stir on the delay by the Centre to grant Inner Line Permit (ILP) to check influx into the state.
