Meghalaya TMC leader Mukul Sangma has called upon the Centre to take steps to stop the alleged illegal coal mining in the state.

Sangma said that since coal is a subject under the Government of India, it is incumbent upon the government to take cognizance of what is happening and take recourse to all the actions as per law to stop these illegalities.

On Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong’s claim that the issue of illegal coal mining is being monitored by the National Green Tribunal, Sangma said that Tynsong can have his own opinion or he can be always on a denial mode.

He added that it is nothing surprising as the government has been from day one on a denial mode of what is happening at ground zero.

The former Meghalaya CM reiterated that TMC demands for an independent inquiry into the alleged coal racket. Sangma further said that illegal coal mining needs to be probed which should be monitored by the court.

He further said that they will ensure that the Centre takes cognizance of this issue even if the state government ignores their demands.

It may be mentioned that recently Mukul Sangma had slammed the Conrad Sangma-led government in the state for allegedly failing to take action against illegal coal mining. The statement of the Leader of Opposition came after paying a sudden visit to Eraaning coal dumping site in South Garo Hills district. He further demanded an investigation to be monitored by the court.
