Assam-Nagaland border issue: Both CMs to meet HM Shah in February

The Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, who is also the Convener of the Assembly’s Select Committee to Examine the Nagaland-Assam Border Issue, held a crucial meeting today to discuss the roadmap for a solution to the inter-state boundary dispute. Significantly, CM Rio said that Nagaland is in favour of an out-of-court settlement of the border dispute.

CM Rio also termed yesterday’s meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati as fruitful.

The Nagaland Chief Minister also informed that he, along with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, will meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in February to take the issue forward.

Earlier on January 23, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met his Nagaland counterpart, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, in Guwahati. During the meeting, both leaders spoke on various issues pertaining to the two states as well as the Northeast. The meeting was also attended by Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton and former Chief Minister TR Zeliang.

Speaking on the border row with Nagaland, Chief Minister Sarma said that right now it is important to maintain the status quo between both sides. He said that the status quo needs to be maintained till the verdict on the matter comes from the Supreme Court.

It is to be noted that Assam and Nagaland have already signed an agreement to reduce their armed presence along the interstate border after Himanta Biswa Sarma took over the reins as Chief Minister.
