Protest erupted outside the Meghalaya secretariat today over the Cheristerfield Thangkiew encounter with members of the Voice of the People of Mawlai dumping the surrendered knives inside the secretariat premises.

As per sources, the protesters first decided to carry out the demonstration outside the State Legislative Assembly where the Autumn Session began on Friday. However, later they demonstrated outside the secretariat.

During the sudden protest, members of the Voice of the People of Mawlai dumped around 500 kitchen knives collected during the knife surrender rally on September 6.

Speaking to the media, leaders of the Voice of People of Mawlai said that the protest was a reminder to the Government and the police of its alleged claim that the knife was a lethal weapon used by the former HNLC leader. The protesters also reiterated their demand for suspension of cops involved in the encounter.

Meanwhile, reacting to the development Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that law will take its own course. And reacting to the demands of the Voice of people of Mawlai for suspension of the cops, Sangma maintained that it would be unfair to initiate action against the police personnel since a judicial probe into the matter is still on.
