Professor Nirmalendu Saha is hopeful that through dialogue and mutual understanding, a resolution can soon be reached.

With tensions rising over the students’ ongoing indefinite hunger strike at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong, Meghalaya, the new Vice-Chancellor In-Charge Professor Nirmalendu Saha expressed concern about the student’s well-being and assured to restore peace and normalcy in the campus.

In a statement today, Professor Nirmalendu Saha expressed deep concern for the well-being of the students, emphasizing that their health and safety are the university’s top priorities.

He said that the students are at the heart of NEHU, and their well-being is his immediate priority.

Professor Saha is hopeful that through dialogue and mutual understanding, a resolution can soon be reached.

“I have personally interacted with the students on several occasions, expressing deep concern for their health and well-being, especially in light of the hunger strike. Despite my best efforts to convince them to call off their strike, I remain hopeful that through dialogue and mutual understanding, a resolution can soon be reached,”said Professor Nirmalendu Saha.

The Vice Chancellor In Charge said that he has been in constant touch with the medical team and doctors monitoring the students on hunger strike.

“Their health is my greatest worry, and I fervently pray that no serious medical issues arise,” he added.

He has also conducted extensive meetings with various stakeholders, including representatives of NEHUSU, and NEHUTA and stated that the discussions have been both constructive and collaborative.

Significantly NEHUNSA has agreed to allow certain essential administrative sections to resume operations. This critical step ensures that scholarships are processed and that academic activities continue without disruption, said Professor Saha.

He said that to address the core concerns, an inquiry Committee has been constituted comprising representatives from all major stakeholders. The committee is rigorously working to complete its due process, and its findings will be submitted to the committee established by the Ministry of Education.

The Vice Chancellor In Charge further appealed to all members of the NEHU community to come together, set aside differences, and focus on the collective goal of building a harmonious and thriving academic environment.

Students at NEHU have been on an indefinite strike for the last 18 days.

The protesting students are demanding the immediate resignation of Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla and other top officials, citing allegations of mismanagement, corruption, and administrative failure under his leadership.
