Meghalaya Power Minister talks of creating power banks to address frequent load-shedding in the state

The minister also hinted that the government would look at giving some relief to the consumers in lieu of the load shedding once the power situation in the state improves

Meghalaya Power Minister AT Mondal on Wednesday said that his department is concerned about the frequent load shedding that the state has been experiencing and the department is looking at several options to fix it. The Minister suggested creating power banks and preparing a well structured power exchange and sharing deal with other states so that Meghalaya can sale power to other states during lean period and buy it back at a lower rate when the demand rises in the state.
“In the monsoon season when we have surplus power we give to other states or some utility companies who want to take power from us, and during the lean period we take it back from them,” the minister said speaking to mediapersons in Shillong.
Acknowledging that the government can feel the pain of the people due to the frequent power cuts, Minister Mondal said, ““I agree that people are suffering, including students, and we are really concerned about this problem. But since our power projects are Hydel Power projects dependent on rain, and due to some added problems, the issue remains”.
He further said that the government and the MeECL is working round the clock to find solutions to the power cut but because of some repair and renovation work that is going on and also because the state is not getting the committed power supply from the central agencies, the problem persists.
Giving details about the shortage of power as of now, Mondal further said, “The central share is 72 million units, the state generates around 16 million units, so currently we are using 88 million units, whereas our requirement is 200 million units, so we are short by 112 million units.”
