Meghalaya police investigate HNLC extortion demand notice circulating on social media

"We cannot rule out at this stage whether the demand notes are genuine or not," said Marak

In a recent development, an extortion demand notice purportedly issued by the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) surfaced on social media, leading to an investigation by the Meghalaya Police. Deputy Inspector General of Police (ER), Davis Marak, addressed the media about the ongoing inquiry into the matter, stating that they are yet to determine the authenticity of the demand notes.

“We cannot rule out at this stage whether the demand notes are genuine or not,” said Marak.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation, and only once we have gathered all the facts, we will be able to ascertain the truth behind these claims,” added Davis Marak.

The HNLC, on the other hand, has distanced itself from the incident and denied any connection to the individual who allegedly claimed affiliation with the organization and issued the demand notes in its name. The person whose name surfaced in connection to the demand notes has also denied involvement, claiming that his identity might have been misused.

“The person whose name was mentioned in the demand note came forward to the police headquarters yesterday and denied any involvement. As part of our inquiry, we are looking into whether someone else might have used his name to carry out these actions,” said Marak.

Addressing the HNLC’s call for aid and donation, the Deputy Inspector General of Police emphasized that providing any form of assistance or contribution to an unlawful association would be subject to legal action.
Regarding reports of 100 demand notices being served by the outfit to individuals across Khasi and Jaintia Hills, Marak confirmed that they have received information about such incidents. However, he expressed concern that no one has come forward to file an official complaint (FIR) in this regard, which could hinder the progress of the investigation.

“It is crucial that anyone who receives such demands or has information related to these incidents comes forward and files a formal complaint with the police,” urged Marak.
