The new peace proposal by HNLC is being welcomed by politcal leaders of Meghalaya. Among them is Meghalaya MLA Adelbert Nongrum has welcomed the offer for peace talks by the HNLC militant outfit.

Talking on the matter, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) MLA from North Shillong has urged the state government to initiative for starting the peace process with the militant outfit at the earliest.

Nongrum said that the people of the state have long wanted the HNLC cadres to return to the mainstream so that peace can return to the state.

He said that beginning the peace process would be a step in this direction.

Nongrum appealed to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to take immediate steps to start a peace talks process.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya BJP chief Ernest Mawrie has also welcomed the possibility of a peace talk process that can facilitate the HNLC cadres returning to the mainstream.

The outlawed HNLC in Meghalaya yesterday expressed its willingness to come to the mainstream and ready to talk to the Government of India without any pre-condition and has decided to give peace a chance once again.

A statement signed by Sainkupar Nongtraw, General secretary cum Publicity secretary of HNLC confirmed the rebel group’s intention to join the peace process.

The statement added that the group’s decision comes after much consultation with different stakeholders including the elders.

The HNLC has also said that it is ready to talk within the ambit of the Indian constitution.

The HNLC in its statement said that the ball is now in the government’s court and hopes that appointment of an interlocutor will resolve the issue soon.
