While one of the prominent partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance is time and again pitching for a common candidate from the United Democratic Party for the 2019 parliamentary elections from Shillong seat, the National People’s Party maintained that no official communication has been made by the UDP in this regard and the issue is yet to be discussed.

NPP leader and Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that the issue is reflected and seen only in media reports and there is nothing official about it as yet as there has been no official communication made by the UDP.

The UDP has expressed that they would field its candidate from the Shillong Lok Sabha Seat while the NPP who is leading the coalition can field a candidate from the Tura Lok Sabha seat.

The Central Election Committee of the UDP has also proposed the name of its senior leaders Paul Lyngdoh and Jemino Mawthoh as the probable candidate who has recently lost the general elections.

He however indicated that the meeting of the coordination committee would be held only after the return of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma from abroad.

Stating that the idea of a common candidate is only from the UDP’s end, Tynsong reiterated that the issue has to be discussed in a proper forum.
