Meghalaya: Massive blaze at popular Police Bazar area in Shillong leaves one woman dead

The incident took place around at 1:20 PM in the residential building at Thana Road, Shillong.

A woman was killed and property worth lakhs gutted after a massive fire broke out in the heart of Shillong’s popular Police Bazar on Saturday.

The incident took place around at 1:20 PM in the residential building at Thana Road just next to Police Bazar.

Following the incident, large number of fire tenders rushed to the spot to douse the inferno.

It took at least three hours for the 8-9 fire tenders to douse the fire.

As per inputs, the Janata furniture building has been completely gutted in the fire.

Acting promptly, the police removed several LPG cylinders from the building thereby avoiding the fire from getting worse.

Authorities evacuated residents from the area and people were restricted from going inside Police Bazar.
The cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained.

Currently, police are inquiring into the incident.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma asked the District Administration to assess the damages and to assist the families affected by the incident.

Taking to X (Formerly known as Twitter), CM wrote, “Concerned about the fire incident that occurred today in Jail Road, Police Bazar, Shillong that caused huge loss to life and property. Have asked the District Administration to assess the damages and to assist the families affected by the incident.”
