As Meghalaya capital Shillong continues to remain tense following the recent spate of violence in the city, the influential Khasi Student’s Union (KSU) has warned that the situation may go from bad to worse if Inner Line Permit (ILP) is not implemented immediately.

Talking to Northeast Live, KSU president Lambok Marngar said the Centre and the state government must implement ILP immediately to ensure normalcy returns.

Stating that ILP demand is not just the demand of the pressure groups but of the people of Meghalaya, Marngar said that if the Centre is serious about protecting the rights of the indigenous people, this is the right time to implement ILP.

Reacting to the statement of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma requesting people to abstain from acts of violence, Marngnar said the KSU did not start the violence. He also said the violence in Ichamati is also having an impact in Garo Hills.

Meanwhile, the Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya witnessed complete shutdown today.

The shutdown was called by 4 pressure groups of the State – Garo Students’ Union, Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People, Association for Democracy and Empowerment and the Achik Youth Welfare Organisation.

The shutdown was called in soliditary with the death of the KSU activist who was killed in the clashes between the workers of the Students’ Union and suspected illegal Bangladeshi migrants at Ichamati in East Khasi Hills district on February 28.
