The shops had been operating without the necessary trading licenses

In a significant move, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) took action against 46 shops owned by non-tribals in the Ri Bhoi District of Meghalaya. These shops located between Byrnihat to Khanapara had been operating without the necessary trade licenses, as mandated by the United Khasi Jaintia Hills District (Trading by Non-Tribals) Regulation, 1954.

The decision to close these businesses was led by the Chief Executive Member of the KHADC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, accompanied by two Executive Members, Alvin Khyriem Sawkmie and Victor Rani.

Representatives from local pressure groups like the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) were also present to oversee the proceedings.

The crackdown came after a surprise inspection by the KHADC team, which found that these shops had been operating for years without the required licenses. The action was taken to enforce local regulations and ensure that businesses in the area comply with the law.
