Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday said that ex-HNLC general secretary Cherishterfield Thangkhiew was clearly involved in the Shillong IED blast.

Replying to a query by Congress MLA Mohendra Rapsang, about the involvement of Cherishterfield in the blast Home minister Rymbui, said that the police had a lead about the ex-HNLC general secretary’s involvement in the blast that occurred on August 12 and a next one which was planned on August 15.

Rymbui defending the police said that cops had to act swiftly so that safety and security of people could be ensured.

Replying to Rapsang’s query on timings of the raid at Cheristerfield Thankiew’s residence, the home minister added it was upto the police department to decide on the timings concerning the urgency of the matter. Rymbui added that cops acted on basis of credible inputs.

Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma also questioned if the government was ever monitoring the activities of Thangkhiew after he surrendered.

MLA Adelbert Nongrum got into a heated debate and kept demanding the Home Minister for specific answers.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stood up to intervene and said that it was inappropriate for the MLA to behave like this. Chief Minister Sangma reiterated that a judicial inquiry is going on based on which necessary action would be taken.
