Meghalaya High Court Wants Probe Into Death of NEPA Trainee From Assam Completed by This May

During the hearing, counsel representing the police authorities informed the court that the investigation remains ongoing.

The Meghalaya High Court has ordered the authorities to complete the investigation into the unnatural death of a police trainee from Assam, who was undergoing training at the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) in Umiam, by May 31, 2025.

The trainee died on March 9, 2022, with one account stating that he drowned in a swimming pool at the academy. However, the victim’s family, which lodged a FIR, strongly disputes this claim. They argue that 29 policemen were present near the victim at the time of the incident and insist that the accidental drowning theory should not be accepted without a thorough probe.

The petitioner has urged the court to ensure a comprehensive investigation, identify those responsible, frame charges, and conduct a swift criminal trial.

During the hearing, counsel representing the police authorities informed the court that the investigation remains ongoing. Expressing surprise over the prolonged delay, a single bench led by Chief Justice IP Mukerji questioned why, even after three years, the authorities had failed to complete the probe and file a charge sheet.

The court has now set May 31, 2025, as the final deadline for concluding the investigation, stressing the need for accountability and justice in the case.
