Reported by Purbasha Bhattacharjee

Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh who travelled almost 4 hours to reach Mawjrong, a far flung village of the state, has assured healthcare services in every nook and corner of the state including the far away places. She spoke about the plight of 79 such villages that remain difficult to access for essential health services.

Speaking to Northeast Live, the Health Minister underlined the necessity of empowering village councils, known as durbars, to ensure healthcare facilities reach in these remote areas. The difficulty of the villagers getting health facilities came upfront when Lyngdoh recently visited Mawjrong village to inaugurate a health sub-centre.

Expressing disbelief at the continued absence of healthcare facilities in these villages, Ampareen Lyngdoh emphasized the need for proactive measures.

“Many villages in Meghalaya are yet to receive health facilities, and I was privileged to visit Mawjrong village to inaugurate a sub-centre in this cluster of villages,” added Ampareen Lyngdoh.

The Health Minister, who undertook a 3.5-hour journey to Mawjrong, witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by residents in accessing healthcare. She commended the village’s strong leadership and anticipated that the newly inaugurated health centre would serve as a facility for improved healthcare services.

Lyngdoh shed light on the hardship in these areas, where pregnant women and sick individuals of all ages and genders have to be transported across difficult terrain in traditional baskets known as human ambulances owing to the lack of accessible healthcare services.

Recognizing the commendable efforts of ‘human ambulances’ – individuals who assist sick and pregnant women in reaching healthcare facilities – the Health Minister announced a token of appreciation from the state government. Monetary assistance will be provided to these heroes, acknowledging their noble task of navigating challenging terrains to ensure healthcare access.
