The row over the killing of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkiew continues with residents of Shillong’s Mawlai locality coming under the banner of the Voice of the People of Mawlai to register a symbolic knife surrender protest.
Scores of local residents took part in a rally in Shillong that culminated with the mass surrender of knives.
This is a unique protest, with the surrendered knives symbolic of the knife police had accused Thangkiew of attacking them with, ultimately leading to his encounter.
It may be mentioned that the Voice of People of Mawlai had been demanding suspension of at least 2 senior cops in connection with Thangkiew’s encounter.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma however has maintained that no action will be taken against the cops until the report of the judicial enquiry is out.
