Meghalaya Dy CM Rules Out Any Foul Play in Death of Hungarian Tourist Puskas Zsolt in Sohra

Prestone Tynsong said that the tourist had accidentally fallen into the river and strongly denied any foul play.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home (Police), Prestone Tynsong, on Friday ruled out any foul play in the death of Hungarian tourist Puskas Zsolt, whose body was found nearly two weeks after he went missing near Sohra.

Death Caused By Accidental Fall

Prestone Tynsong said that the tourist had accidentally fallen into the river and strongly denied any foul play. He pointed out the risks posed by Meghalaya’s rivers, especially in hilly terrains, and reminded tourists to stay cautious while exploring or trekking near riverbanks. He stressed that water bodies in the hills differ greatly from those in the plains and can be extremely dangerous for unaccompanied or unaware visitors.

Solo Trek Turn Fatal

Authorities recovered Zsolt’s body on Thursday afternoon around 1:30 PM at Ramdait village along the route to Tyrna in Shella under the Sohra Civil Sub-Division. The prolonged search operation was conducted by police, Home Guards, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local volunteers.

Zsolt had gone missing on March 29. Police investigations found that he had checked into a hotel in Laitumkhrah at 3:45 AM on the same day and checked out by 9:00 AM. He then boarded a local taxi, which dropped him at Mawsahew near Sohra around noon. From there, he reportedly began a solo trek toward Mawkawir, with the aim of reaching Nongriat, carrying only a backpack.

The Hungarian Embassy alerted local authorities on April 2 after failing to contact him, which triggered a coordinated search effort. His body, discovered in a partially decomposed state, was located in a remote and steep area, indicating a likely accidental fall.

Deputy CM Tynsong expressed deep regret over the incident and reiterated the need for tourists to strictly follow safety advisories while visiting remote and hilly locations in Meghalaya.
