The notice, issued by director of school education and literacy, Swapnil Tembe, said that the principal had violated government rules
The principal of the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Jowai, West Jaintia Hills, has been issued a show-cause notice for allowing students to play a political party’s campaign song during Teacher’s Day celebrations.
The notice, issued by the director of school education and literacy, Swapnil Tembe, on September 8, stated that the principal had violated government rules by permitting the song to be played within the school premises.
Meghalaya’s education minister, Rakkam A Sangma, has expressed strong disapproval of the incident, emphasizing that schools should not be transformed into political forums. He mentioned that while teachers are allowed to participate in politics, it is not appropriate to bring politics into school settings.
“We have issued a show-cause notice to the principal of that school, and I have been told that the principal came and met the director and apologized. However, I would like to say that teachers, as per a high court order, are allowed to join politics, but it is not correct to convert a school campus into a political forum; schools have certain limits,” said Rakkam A Sangma.
The education minister urged students to refrain from playing political party songs in the future, emphasizing the importance of discouraging such acts.
