Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma today visited the 7th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship which is underway at SAI, NEHU from the 25th Nov 2023-1st Dec 2023.
Speaking at the occasion, CM Sangma said that it is an honour for the State to be able to host the National Boxing Championship. “There has been a strong push by the government to Sports in the state by supporting associations, creating more training facilities, creating sports infrastructures, recognizing star sportspersons and by hosting many sports events,’’ he said. He said that while ensuring that sports gets its due attention by the government there are challenges but added, “We will learn and improve from the challenges we face along the way and hopefully in future we will be able to host international sports events,” he said. He also stressed on the need to scientifically tap the sports talent at a very young age and said “If we want our youngsters to win medals and bring us laurels we have to scientifically identify their talent at a young age, give them the proper training and mentoring without waiting for him to turn 10-15 years’ old.”
The Chief Minister further stated that the youngsters need to be given the right opportunity and their interest be it in sports or music should be given the right direction. “This is the reason why we have different programs for the youth in the state so that their passion and interest do not go to waste,” he added.
Also present during the occasion were Director, Sports and Youth Affairs, Isawanda Laloo, IAS and S K Shandil, Technical Delegate and Member Boxing Federation of India.
