Conrad Sangma has directed the tourism department to set up a committee to review the issue and analyse the tourism sector of the state.

Amid concerns raised by the cab operators of Meghalaya regarding Assam registration taxis ferrying people to tourist spots of the state impacting their livelihood, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has directed the tourism department to set up a committee to review the issue and analyse the tourism sector of the state.

CM Sangma said, “I have received a letter from the taxi association outlining their concerns. This prompted for the formation of the committee. The committee will gather inputs from all stakeholders, including taxi drivers, to assess the current situation.”

The committee would include representatives from the departments of tourism, law enforcement, administration, and other relevant agencies including key stakeholders like the taxi associations.
The committee’s purpose is to conduct a thorough analysis of the tourism sector, particularly its impact on taxis, to better understand the challenges and propose solutions.

Moreover, the report will provide an analysis of the number of registered and unregistered taxis, the volume of tourists visiting the region, and how various decisions could impact the sector.
The initiative aims to ensure that the tourism sector’s growth is balanced with the interests of those working within it, particularly taxi operators.
