With the Citizenship Amendment Bill being passed and a region wide opposition to the new law showing no signs of receding, the chorus now is for bringing the entire Northeast under the ILP system.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has already met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday and specifically demanded immediate extension of ILP to the state. This demand has gained momentum after the Centre brought Manipur under the ambit of ILP.

The Chief Minister led a Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government delegation and called on Home Minister Amit Shah at around 12:30 am on Saturday in Delhi. The delegation urged the Centre to consider their demands and implement Inner Line Permit system in Meghalaya.

Meanwhile, the Conrad Sangma has decided to convene a one day special session to bring in a government resolution to implement ILP in the state.

Taking to Twitter, Sangma said Home Minister Amit Shah was receptive to all the issues raised by the delegation and has agreed to examine the matter.

The demand is growing in Assam with the AASU demanding ILP in the state. The region’s apex student group, the NESO is also at the forefront of the ILP demand for all the eight states in the Northeast.
