Mega Week Long Events to Mark 400th Birth Anniversary of Lachit Borphukan in Assam and New Delhi

The Assam Government has planned a series of events to celebrate the 400th birth anniversary of the legendary Ahom general of Assam, Bir Lachit Borphukan. The grand celebrations will begin on November 18 in Assam and conclude on November 25 in New Delhi.

Sharing the details of the grand celebrations, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the celebrations would begin on November 18 with march past by police, army, para military, navy, air force and NCC cadets in every district of Assam as a mark of respect to the legendary Ahom General.

On November 19, essay competition on the life and achievements of Lachit Borphukan would be held in schools, colleges, universities across Assam. On November 20, the state government would officially take over 20 bihgas of land for the development and expansion of Lachit Maidam in Jorhat.

An amphitheatre and a 150 ft statue would come up at the Maidam. On November 21-22, all districts would organise blood donation camps, plantation drives and hold several social welfare, cultural and academic events.

From November 23 to 25, the celebrations would be held in New Delhi. On November 23 a national seminar titled The Ahom Saga of Hope, Skill and Courage would be held at Vigyan Bhavan in the national capital. Renowned historians would attend the seminar.

Another seminar titled ‘Ignored Histography of Assam’s Assertion’ would be held on November 24. The same day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah would release a documentary on the life and achievements of Lachit Borphukan.

PM Modi would address the gathering on the concluding day, November 25.

CM Sarma released the theme song for the celebrations today (November 16) in Guwahati. The song has been composed by well known singer-composer Zubeen Garg.

Lachit Borphukan was an Ahom General who successfully battled the Mughals and halted their advance to Assam in the 17th century. He was a contemporary of Maratha hero and ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji.
