Mayhem in Manipur: MLAs, Ministers’ Homes Set Ablaze, Internet Suspended, Curfew imposed

The district administrations of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakching and Thoubal have imposed curfews to curb escalating violence.
Manipur is burning again and the capital city of Imphal is under siege as angry protestors went on a rampage vandalising, ransacking and burning homes, vehicles and other properties of MLAs and Ministers of the state.
Peoples’ fury was unleashed on the streets of Imphal as they protested the merciless killing of 3 children aged 10 months, 2 and half years and 8 years old and 3 women aged 25, 31 and 60 years old whose bodies were found dumped in gunny bags early today morning, 5 days after they were abducted by armed gunmen from Jakuradhor in Jiribam district on November 11.
First to hit the streets today were the Emas (mothers in Manipuri) who started burning tyres on the street and blocking roads as the number of protestors swelled through the day. Imphal looked like a war zone as young men and women and older women swarmed the streets of the city with sticks and torches setting on fire whatever came on their way.
Among the first to bear the brunt of the peoples’ anger were RK Imo Singh – Sagolband MLA and son-in-law of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Dr. Sapam Ranjan – Health and Public Relations Minister and Konthoujam MLA, Nishikant Sapam, Keishamthong MLA, Thangjam Arun Kumar, Wangkhei MLA, Sapam Kunjakeswar, Patsoi MLA, Khwairakpam Raghumani, Uripok MLA, Soraisham Kebi Devi, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa MLA and Khumukcham Joykisan, Thangmeiband MLA whose houses were vandalised and properties set ablaze.
S Kebi Devi had a narrow escape as she was whisked away by security forces to a safe place minutes before her house was attacked and set on fire by protestors.
The district administrations of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakching and Thoubal have imposed curfews to curb escalating violence.
Internet Services Suspended
Amid the volatile situation, the Chief Secretary of Manipur issued an order announcing the suspension of internet and mobile data services in seven districts – Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur. The suspension will remain in place for two days starting from 5:15 PM on November 16, 2024, except for government offices and specific exempted cases.
