For the first time ever in Manipur, over hundreds of young students, starting from class 11 to postgraduate, both boys and girls, spent the night not in the comfort of their beds in their homes, but on hard, cold cement slabs and wooden racks in the iconic Ima market in Imphal.

These students who thronged the streets of the capital city, Imphal, on Monday demanding a peaceful environment to study, besides demanding the removal of Assam Rifles from Manipur and vesting full power in the Biren Singh-led state government, including the charge of the Unified Command, spent the night at the Ima market because they refused to go home until they hear from Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya whom they met yesterday afternoon and submitted a memorandum with their demands.

Many of the students, whose homes are away from Imphal, survived the night on biscuits, some cake and little food and water brought to them by locals, and their friends and relatives.

In a show of solidarity, over 100 locals of Imphal came out at night to stand in support of the protesting students.

Today the students are reportedly planning to march to the Raj Bhawan to once again put forth their demands before the Governor.

Yesterday, after the protest rally, a few of the students met Chief Minister Biren Singh too with their demands.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh after the meeting said that he had a fruitful discussion with the students of Imphal College and Ibottonsana Higher Secondary School at the CM’s Secretariat.

Meanwhile, Manipur Police has urged the public not to resort to violence during protests. Taking to social media, Manipur Police requested the public not to resort to violence while protesting. The police called upon the public to protest peacefully within the confines of the law. The police also pointed out that some miscreants motivated by vested interests are taking undue advantage of such protests.
