Tension in Manipur is refusing to die down. Last night irate mobs tried to storm the residences of Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Education Dr R K Ranjan Singh and Manipur Minister for Power, Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Agriculture, Science and Technology Th Biswajit Singh.

In the first incident last night, an angry mob tried to attack the residence of Dr R K Ranjan Singh located near Kongba Bazaar in Imphal East district of the state. According to sources, security forces including Manipur Police and RAF (Rapid Action Force) personnel had a tough time controlling the mob. They resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse the mob.

The minister was present in the house when the mob was about to attack. He had arrived in Imphal just two days’ back and left for Delhi this morning, the minister told Northeast Live over the phone.

In the second incident, angry mob tried to attack the residence of Manipur Minister Th Biswajit Singh, however, security forces managed to stop the mob much before they could reach the Minister’s residence.

Presence of heavily armed security forces averted two major incidents.

The two attempts have come within a day of an angry mob vandalising the Bishnupur residence of Manipur Minister for Public Works Department, Youth Affairs and Sports Govindas Konthoujam.
The minister is 7-time MLA from Bishnupur.

The attempts to attack the residences of Union Minister Singh and Manipur Minister Th Biswajit has happened even as Union Minister of State for Home Nityananda Rai is camping in Imphal since yesterday. BJP National Spokesperson and Northeast-in-charge Sambit Patra is also in Imphal.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit the state from May 29-June 1.
