Manipur unrest: Curfew relaxed for 12 hours in Imphal East from 5 am to 5 pm today

Curfew has been relaxed in Manipur’s Imphal East district for 12 hours from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. today in order to facilitate the general public to purchase essential items such as food and medicines, informed, Khumanthem Diana Devi, District Magistrate, Imphal East.

“Total public curfew under Section 144 CrPC, 1973 prohibiting the movement of any person outside their respective residences imposed in Imphal East District vide this Office Order dated 3rd May 2023 is hereby relaxed from 5 AM to 5 PM on 18th June 2023 except for the area for which the schedule is given below in order to facilitate the general public to purchase essential items including medicines and food supplies”, read the order issued by Khumanthem Diana Devi on Saturday.

The curfew has been relaxed in –Hatta crossing to RDS crossing, Minuthong to Hatta crossing, RDS crossing to Sanjenthong, and the Imphal River from Sanjenthong to Minuthong.

Curfew has been imposed under section 144 of CrPc in Manipur on May 3, 2023, after violent clashes broke between two communities in the state. Since then the state has been on the boil.

Internet service is also suspended in the state since May 3 to prevent any untoward incident.

Over 100 people have died, hundreds injured, thousands have been displaced, a huge trust deficit between communities have cropped up, and people are fleeing from their homes in their own state and taking shelter in other states.
