Primary and secondary school students hit the streets in Imphal today along with as many as six students’ groups including the All Manipur Students Union, Manipur students’ federation and the DESAM to stage protest demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the students and teachers of Manipur University who were picked up by police during the midnight raid on the campus on September 20.
While police soon reached the spot to disperse the protesters, the agitators showed no signs of resistance.
Significantly, the 6 students’ groups also had a near 3-hour discussion with the members of Manipur University Teachers Association on the current impasse. However, the outcome of the talks is yet to be known.
Speaking to Northeast Live, DESAM organizing secretary Somorjit said that the students’ organisations will continue their agitation until the teachers and students are released.
Meanwhile, uncertainty looms large over the release arrested students and teachers with this becoming the main bone of contention between the university community and the state government.
