Manipur School Bus Accident : 8 school girls dead, 26 critically injured

It was a sad Wednesday morning for Manipur. Just when the day began, news of a tragic bus accident came in. At least 8 young girls were killed and 26 others including teachers of Thambalnu Higher Secondary School were injured in the horrific accident that took place when on way to Leimatak, a popular tourist spot. The students and teachers were on their way to Leimatak on excursion.
Five girls died on the spot and 3 died at the Bishnupur district hospital. The 26 critically injured are being treated at a hospital. Manipur Health Minister Sapam Ranjan had reached the spot within minutes of the accident.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh condoled the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for each of the dead and Rs one lakh each for those critically injured.
Acting promptly, Manipur government has banned excursions till January 10, 2023.
The accident, according to locals of the area occurred at around 11:30 am when the bus was negotiating a turn, lost control and turned turtle. The accident took place just 1 km away from Leimatak.
Locals of Leimatak area and adjoining villagers rushed to rescue the victims.
Police team from Bishnupur district had reached the spot and rescued rest of the teachers and students. A team from Khoupum police station also joined in the rescue operation.
A medical team from Bishnupur District Hospital also rushed to the accident spot.
